From today’s 9:08 AM NWS Wilmington briefing:
- Hurricane Erin is forecast to move off to the northeast, staying well off the U.S. East Coast.
- Large swells from Erin will continue to impact the coastline this week, producing life-threatening rip currents, high surf, coastal flooding, and hazardous marine conditions, though most conditions will gradually improve through the remainder of the week.
The Village’s swimming advisory issued on Tuesday morning remains in effect through Friday.
An assessment of the East Beach and South Beach shoreline completed earlier today indicated that the wave run-up toward the toe of the primary frontal dune system showed no evidence of erosion.
On South Beach, the predominant offshore winds kept things at bay and helped with removing the escarpments (shoreline drop-offs) that were present, although they were not very high due to the recent remediation work that was completed last week. The South Beach shoreline is back to a smooth transition.
Staff also noted that the escarpments along the west side of some of the groin tubes were also removed by the wave action.
Overall, the island fared well with this event, and the Village will continue to monitor the tropical activity in the Atlantic.
