Getting Around the Island

Tram Service

Transportation between the island ferry terminal and your home by tram is included with a general passenger ferry ticket.  It is highly recommended that you make reservations in advance because seating is limited.  More information about the trams is located HERE.

Golf Carts

Many rental properties on Bald Head Island include the use of the owner’s golf cart(s).  Daily golf cart rental is available through Cary Cart Company which has a rental location near the ferry landing.  For more information go to https://www.carycartco.com/bald-head-island-rentals/ or call 910-457-7333.

Gas-powered golf carts are prohibited on Village streets. All-terrain vehicles (ATVs), gators, side-by-sides, and similar light-work or recreational vehicles are prohibited on Village streets (exceptions are in place for emergency vehicles, BHI Conservancy and Bald Head Club).

Bicycles

Bicycles are an excellent way to get around the island.  Visitors can bring their bicycles over on the passenger ferry.  You will need to purchase an Over-Sized Baggage ticket and bring your bike to the arrivals curb at the lower level.  Present a ticket for each bike you are bringing over.

Do not forget your helmets. Adults are strongly encouraged to wear helmets on Village streets because they share the road with golf carts and some gas-powered vehicles.  Per Village ordinance, a protective helmet is required for any person under the age of sixteen (16) years when operating a human-powered device, such as a bicycle, a tricycle, rollerblades, in-line skates or roller skates, human-powered scooter, or human-powered skateboard on Village streets.

Small Electrics

The use of electric scooters, electric skateboards, hoverboards, Segways, or similar apparatus on Village streets is limited to individuals holding valid drivers’ licenses. Operators are required to wear helmets.

These are considered Over-Sized Baggage.  You will need to purchase an Over-Sized Baggage ticket and bring your bike to the arrivals curb at the lower level.  Present a ticket for each item you are bringing over.

Road Safety

Safety on the roads of Bald Head Island is critical because the roads are shared with pedestrians, bicycles, golf carts, and some gas-powered vehicles.  The island-wide speed limit is 18 MPH unless posted otherwise (if posted, it will be LOWER than 18 MPH).  This is for ALL vehicles (golf carts and gas-powered). The rules of the road for the State of North Carolina apply to the roads on Bald Head Island, regardless of the type of vehicle.  This includes only licensed drivers operating golf carts, no open alcohol containers, and no driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.  Click HERE for some additional golf cart safety tips.

Parking Rules & Tips

Bald Head Island Ordinance
Section 28-33.  Parking*
Prohibited.

(1) No vehicle or trailer shall be left unattended in a location where it impedes traffic or emergency vehicle access or transit.

(2) No vehicle or trailer shall be parked in a posted “no parking” area.

When parking at any one of the Village’s public beach access locations (Click Here to View a Map)  it is important to make sure that your golf cart is completely off the road (edge of paved surface).  All four tires must be off the pavement. Not doing so is unsafe and could result in a parking citation.  In many cases, carts are found blocking emergency accesses or taking up the roadway to the point where they impede the safe and swift travel of emergency vehicles.  ALL vehicles (both electric and internal combustion engines) must park off the paved roads on Bald Head Island.
