Job Title: Full-time Public Services Specialist

Hourly Hiring Rate: $16.76 with an increase after completion of 6-month probation 

Work Schedule: Sunday thru Thursday 5:30 am – 2:30 pm, may occasional paid overtime

 Deadline:  Open until filled

Perform maintenance duties including repairs of streets, sidewalks, drainage systems, buildings, grounds, and beach access points. Grounds and park maintenance to include picking up litter debris, trimming trees, shrubs, and laying mulch. Help with preparation for a variety of special events and celebrations. Work involves operating a variety of tools and equipment. Work is performed in both inside and outside environments, in extreme weather, and exposure to various hazards conditions. Operates construction equipment such as dump trucks, garbage trucks, flail mower, loaders, tampers, trenchers, air compression driven equipment, and other related light and medium equipment; performs preventive maintenance and minor repairs to equipment.

Graduation from high school and 2 years of related experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience.  Must have a valid NC Driver’s License

Must be able to physically perform the basic life operational functions of climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, reaching, standing, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, feeling, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally; 50 pounds of force frequently; and 20 pounds constantly. Must possess the visual acuity to operate mobile equipment such as the loader and dump truck in a safe manner.

Job Title: Full-time Wastewater Plant Technician

Hourly Hiring Rate: $19.40 with increase after 6 months

This is an entry-level position to monitor the well, water plant, and wastewater plant operations.  Observing, recording mechanical readings, and the results of standard chemical and biological tests to make necessary adjustments in the chemical feed and mechanical process as test results dictate.  Make regular rounds to inspect water and wastewater plant operations taking readings and performing maintenance and repairs.  Work with the crew in maintenance and repair of related water and sewer lines, hydrants, valves, and all appurtenances.  Work includes substantial recordkeeping, maintaining a written or digital work log of related activities.  Employee is subject to hazards associated with well and pumping stations including working in outside variable weather conditions. May be required to wear respirators when working around chemical treatment tanks and will be subject to the final OSHA standards on blood-borne pathogens.  Subject to on-call and call-back requirements.  Must be able to perform medium work and visual acuity to read gauges, dials and observe moving parts of machines and to record and review written records.

Graduation from high school supplemented by course work in chemistry or biology and experience in the operation and maintenance of a well water system and wastewater biological system or maintenance and repair of water and sewer plant operations.  The person in this position will be supported financially in education and testing cost to ultimately earn the following certifications: Water certification B-Well and Wastewater Biological 3 certifications or ability to obtain NC PWS B-Well and Biological 3 ORC Certification within twelve months of hire.  Valid NC Driver’s License required.

Job Title:  FT Public Works Specialist

Hourly Rate: $16.76 after 6 months $17.59

Monitor, coordinate and implement the Solid Waste and Recycling Programs under the supervision of the Streets, Solid Waste, and Stormwater Superintendent. Perform various maintenance, repair, and construction work on streets, buildings, grounds, beach, and stormwater management system.  Perform solid waste collection for the Village.  Must be able to work in outside variable weather conditions.  Must be able to perform heavy work and operate equipment.

HS graduation or GED and experience in semi-skilled maintenance or construction work.  Must have or able to obtain a valid NCDL. Must pass a pre-employment drug test and background check.

Automotive Mechanic – The Village of Bald Head Island is looking for a skilled mechanic to perform preventative maintenance and repairs on automotive, light, and heavy equipment.  Repair gasoline and diesel engines, motors, breaks, electrical and hydraulic systems. Perform State Inspections for Village vehicles.

HS diploma. Courses in mechanical or automotive repair and at least two years experience in automotive maintenance and repair work.  Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) and/or Emergency Vehicle Technician (EVT) preferred or equivalent combination of education and experience. Must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, 50 pounds of force frequently and 20 pounds of force constantly.  Special Requirement: Valid NC Drivers License and NC Vehicle Inspection license or ability to obtain.

Hiring range: $44,498 – $51,511 based on experience and certifications. Excellent benefit package.

Public Safety Officer Paramedic – PSO Paramedics are responsible for performing work in the areas of fire suppression, law enforcement, emergency medical and rescue services to protect the lives and property of the Village and residents and visitors of Bald Head Island. 

Responds to calls, patrol the Village and Island providing services in law enforcement, firefighting, emergency medical response and water rescue. good judgment, initiative and calm control when performing duties.  When dealing with the public must possess good communication skills and the ability to be tact and decisive in all interactions.  Employees typically work a 24.5-hour shift working 1 day on and 3 days off.   

HS graduation or equivalent supplemented by training courses in law enforcement, firefighting and certified as a Paramedic with considerable knowledge of public safety work.  Special requirements: valid Class B NCDL.  Before assignment to sworn duties, must have completed at least the minimum requirements established by the NC Justice Training and Standards Commission for certified law enforcement officers. Paramedic Certification and approved to practice by the County Medical Director and Firefighter I & II Certification.  Physical requirements: must be able to perform heavy work exerting up to 100 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 50 pounds of force frequently and /or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects.  Must possess the visual acuity to operate a vehicle and distinguish details and differences when observing people, places, or things.

Public Safety Paramedic:  Salary range based on qualifications $46,723 – $49,059
