The Department of Public Safety is charged with ensuring the safety and well-being of the residents, employees, and visitors to the island as well as the security and safety of the properties on the island. All Public Safety Officers are required to become certified in law enforcement, firefighting and as an EMT or paramedic. In addition, they must be trained in water rescue.
The Village’s Public Works Department maintains the Village’s public parks, roads, right-of-way, buildings, and equipment. Public works staff pick up yard debris, clean the beach of debris, collect trash from receptacles at the public accesses, repair and maintain the Village’s beach accesses and signage, and perform other various duties for the Village. The Public Works Department also oversees the recycle center located at the Public Works facility.
Shoreline Protection is a comprehensive approach to coastal management which is designed to mitigate the effects of ocean currents, waves, and storms. The Village monitors the island’s various coastal interfaces through a “best practice” approach and seeks to enhance dunes and promote a robust shoreline. There have been several peer-reviewed publications that describe how wide beaches with established vegetated dunes have protected property during significant storm events.
The Village’s Utilities Department provides the Village’s water and sewer utilities. Customers are advised to sign up for the Village’s emergency notification system, CODE RED, to receive important information about the Village utility services. Make sure that when you sign up, you use your Bald Head Island address. The Village can send messages out to only the affected areas if there is a service interruption.
The Village owns and maintains four public parks. In addition to offering these recreational amenities, the Village maintains several public beach accesses.
