Knox Box Program

Knox boxes are small, steel boxes that are attached to the address bollards on Bald Head Island.  The box holds a key and an information sheet and can only be opened by the Public Safety Department with a secure key. Knox boxes give first responders access to your home or business in an emergency.  First responders will be able to access your property when it matters most. Removing barriers to entry reduces injuries to responders and minimizes property damage.

Additionally, the Public Safety Department (PS) must gain access to determine if an alarm is false or not. If there is nobody at the property, PS would have to break through a door or window to check the property (repair and replacement is at the owner’s expense), a Knox box prevents this from occurring.

PLEASE NOTE:  Public Safety will not use the Knox box for any other reason.  Public Safety cannot unlock your door to allow homeowners, relatives, guests, or renters into the home if they are locked out.

If you are a new property owner and your property does not currently have a Knox box, boxes can be purchased through the Knox Company HERE.  The Department of Public Safety does not distribute them. In addition to the paperwork required by the Knox Company, the Village of Bald Head Island requires THIS FORM to be filled out, please read the second page for important information about the Knox box.  If you have any questions, please contact the Department of Public Safety at (910) 457-5252 or psadmin@villagebhi.org.

For property owners with Knox boxes:

If your lock has changed, make sure the correct key is in your Knox box.  Also, if you have had a Knox box for a while, your key may be rusted.  To check or replace your key please contact Public Safety.
