Village Welcome Guide
Welcome to Bald Head Island!
Bald Head Island is a very special and unique place and we are glad you chose to own property here. The Village is working on a comprehensive guide to assist new property owners with getting settled on the island. Below are a few topics with tips to get you started.
UTILITIES
The Village of Bald Head Island (the municipality) provides water and sewer for the entire island. To set up a utility account for water and sewer service, you will need to complete a Utility Service Agreement and hand-deliver to Village Hall or mail the agreement to P.O. Box 3009 Bald Head Island, NC 28461 or utilities.clerk@villagebhi.org. If you would like to pay your monthly bill (due on the 20th of each month) by bank draft, you can set this up by including the Bank Draft Authorization form with the agreement. For more information about the Village’s utilities, CLICK HERE.
The Island Directory includes the contact information for electric, telephone, internet, and cable/satellite providers in the area.
TRASH, RECYCLING, YARD DEBRIS & BULK ITEMS
Trash
The Village of Bald Head Island has a contract with Waste Industries to provide household trash pick-up at each residence. Each residence has a secured trash enclosure and a YES/NO sign for the address bollard at the street. The trash will only be picked up if the YES sign is visible on trash day. If the YES sign is visible, Waste Industries will remove the trash from the secured trash enclosure. There is no need to place trash on the curbside. If you do not have a YES/NO sign you may pick one up at Public Works during operating hours.
Trash is picked up twice a week between Memorial Day and Labor Day and once a week during the remainder of the year. There are two different trash routes so the days of the week differ depending on the location of your residence. CLICK HERE for the route map and the current Trash & Yard Debris Calendar.
Recycling
Recycling can be brought to the Recycling Center located at the Public Works facility (271 Edward Tech Extension VIEW ON MAP). CLICK HERE for a list of accepted recycling materials. There is a separate receptacle for cardboard. The rest of the materials can be comingled. Do not put any bagged recyclables in the container.
Yard Debris
The Village has scheduled for the pick-up yard debris throughout the year. In order to participate, you must be a year-round resident that does your own yard work. CLICK HERE for the schedule and instructions on this service.
For more information, go to the Public Works webpage HERE. If you have any questions about waste, please contact Customer Service at (910) 457-9700 ext, 1000.
Bulk Items
The Public Works Facility accepts excess household trash, larger items (such as furniture and white goods ex. refrigerators/freezers/washer/dryers). No mattresses will be accepted, mattresses must be requested through a bulk pick up for a charge of $85.00 per mattress. Items cannot be left outside of the Public Works gate and must be dropped off Monday through Friday 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. or Saturdays and Sunday from 7 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can request a bulk pick up by calling our Customer Service Representative at (910) 457-9700. Pickups are $100.00 with a limit of two items. Mattresses are $85.00 each. You must place all items to be picked up outside for our crew to make the pick up.

GETTING YOUR MAIL
All property owners on Bald Head Island are eligible to receive a post office box for their use at no charge. The US Postal Service (USPS) requires post office box customers to pay a $6.00 key deposit which will be collected when you open a post office box.
To open a post office box, simply stop by the post office and our staff will help you. According to the USPS guidelines, when you apply for a post office box two valid forms of identification are required when you obtain your keys. One form of identification must contain a photograph and one must be traceable to the bearer (prove your physical address).
Photo ID options:
- Valid driver’s license or state non-driver’s identification card
- Armed forces, government, university, or recognized corporate identification card
- Passport, passport card, alien registration card, or certificate of naturalization
Non-photo ID traceable to bearer options:
- Current lease, mortgage, or deed of trust
- Voter or vehicle registration card
- Home or vehicle insurance policy
Property owners who wish to fill out the post office box application ahead of time are welcome to do so. Please select the size of box you wish to use and we will try to accommodate depending on availability. You can email the completed form to villageipc@villagebhi.org and it can be printed out when you arrive at the Post Office.
GETTING BIG STUFF HERE
Oversized items that are not shipped by FedEx or UPS, such as sofas or sectionals, are usually shipped via a common carrier like DHL or others. The Island Package Center (which is operated by the Village like the Post Office) does not accept these items. These items will need to be shipped to the Bald Head Island Warehouse at Deep Point Marina, barged over to the island, and then trucked to its island destination. Please contact Bald Head Island Warehouse at 910-457-5007 to arrange the shipping and delivery of these items.
