NEW Golf Cart Registration Renewal System for 2026

Within the next few weeks, golf cart owners will receive a letter (explanation letter) and a “registration invitation” from the Village, detailing the new golf cart registration renewal system for 2026.  Please make sure you read the letter when you receive it.  In the meantime, here is a summary of what to expect.

  1. The registration invitation includes a list of the registered carts under the same name and mailing address. A website link is provided where owners will log in (with a unique registration pin included in the registration invitation) and be able to verify/update insurance information, make, model, serial numbers, etc., for the carts they own.
  2. Owners will then pay the appropriate registration fees online. For this first year, 2026 rates are prorated based on the golf cart’s original registration date, and then owners will pay in full for 2027 (details are in the explanation letter).
  3. Our vendor will be mailing the new registration stickers to the mailing address provided by the owner in the new registration system.  There will no longer be an option to pick up stickers at the Department of Public Safety.  All stickers will be mailed directly from the vendor, even new and “new to the island” carts (used carts delivered from the mainland that have never been registered on BHI).
  4. Each registered cart will receive four stickers. The two large ones shall be affixed to the front of the cart and the driver’s side rear panel. The two smaller stickers should come already affixed in the upper right corner of the large stickers and will be color-coded and include the registration expiration month.
  5. Registrations have been due by January 1st each year, and we would like vehicle owners to register on time this year. As the Village monitors the processing timeframes, we will determine an appropriate time to begin enforcement for expired registrations, and the public will be notified.
  6. In future years, the renewal date will be driven by the original registration date, thus spreading out the number of renewals processed throughout the year. Golf cart owners will receive a registration invitation as the expiration date of their registration approaches.

The Village will be in communication with Islanders throughout the process via our Village’s Voice e-mails and our social media channels.  If necessary, frequently asked questions and answers will be addressed on the Village website (HERE) and through our communication channels.  Questions can be sent to public.information@villagebhi.org.
