Before staying on the island, visitors are encouraged to check with their medical and/or health insurance providers to see if telehealth options are available in case a medical issue arises.

Visitors and residents of Bald Head Island may also seek medical care at the on-island medical provider.

Patients may also call the Urgent Care in Southport at 910-454-4732 for minor illnesses M – F, 8:00 a.m. – 6:30 p.m.

The Emergency Department at Dosher Memorial Hospital is a five-minute drive from the Bald Head Island ferry terminal in Southport.

Prescription Medications

Other than shipping and mailing of medications to the Island Package Center and Post Office, the Village does not take part in delivery of medications to the island. A Southport pharmacy used to send medications over by ferry, but that has since been discontinued.

If you need to get your medications over to the island, here are a few options:

  1. Use mail delivery where applicable.
  2. Reach out to family/friends/neighbors.
  3. Reach out to Project Longevity – they may be able to get you in touch with a home health practitioner that can assist, for a fee.
  4. Reach out to the Village Chapel administrator – they may be able to assist.

Dosher Clinic will not operate on Bald Head Island in 2025.

In summer 2024, visits declined to less than 30.  Due to this change, Dosher felt they could better support BHI through education and outreach opportunities while reaching more residents and visitors.  This means that Dosher will no longer have an on-island clinic.

Dosher has planned several opportunities to reach residents and visitors on BHI.  In March 2025 they conducted a community wellness seminar. Here are a few others that are in the works:

  • June – Attend Public Safety Day to help provide awareness and answer questions about Dosher as the local hospital and providers to serve those in the community.
  • August – Informational session with the Dosher team to talk about our Master Facility Plan and growth. This would include information about our New Emergency Room which is under construction now and planned to be completed in early 2026.
  • October- Flu Vaccines offered on the island.
