Background:
Carin Faulkner was hired as Village’s first Public Information Officer in August of 2019. She had previously served as the Assistant Town Manager/Town Clerk for the Town of North Topsail Beach and began her public service career in 2002 at the New Hanover County Health Department. While working for New Hanover County, Ms. Faulkner earned a Master of Public Information with a concentration on Public Policy from the University of North Carolina at Wilmington (UNCW). She received her undergraduate degree from UNCW in Communication Studies.
During her years of working in local government, Ms. Faulkner has participated in numerous courses to supplement her university education including the UNC School of Government’s Municipal Administration certification course, the International City and County Management Association’s (ICMA) Local Government 101 certification course, and Academy for Strategic Management (UNCW). In 2016 Ms. Faulkner was selected to participate in the Local Government Federal Credit Union (LGFCU) Fellow program, which is a select group of individuals who represent the future of North Carolina local government leadership.
Village Role:
Under the supervision of the Town Manager, the Public Information Officer’s responsibilities include being a spokesperson for the Village, providing guidance to the Village Manager, Mayor and Village Council, and Department Heads on issues affecting or involving the Village, and develops strategic media plans to address these issues, and working on special projects assigned by the Village Manager.
The Public Information Officer also serves as part of the management team during an emergency event, responsible for conveying responsive, accurate information in a helpful manner to the homeowners and the general public.
As Deputy Village Clerk, the PIO fills in when the Village Clerk is absent or the position is vacant. The Deputy Clerk prepares minutes for the Planning Board/Board of Adjustment meetings.
