Severe Weather Update #2

Current Forecast:

According to NWS Wilmington’s latest briefing (HERE):

TD #9 has strengthened slightly to a tropical storm (Imelda). Confidence continues to increase in Imelda’s track and minimal impacts across SE NC and NE SC with the greatest impacts along the coast/over the nearby Atlantic.

Summary of Potential Impacts:

  • Tropical storm force wind gusts are possible, especially along the NE SC coast and far southern NC coast, although downed trees/power lines and power outages are unlikely.
  • Storm surge flooding directly from Imelda is not expected but minor coastal flooding could still occur mid to late week due to strong/persistent northeast winds. Some beach erosion is also possible.
  • Rainfall flooding is possible, especially Monday through Tuesday night, mainly in low-lying and poor drainage areas near the coast.
  • Tornadoes are unlikely, although waterspouts are possible Monday through Tuesday across the adjacent Atlantic waters.
  • Dangerous marine/surf conditions are expected to develop by Monday night and Tuesday, along with strong rip currents through most of next week. Swells from Humberto will also add to the hazardous maritime/beach conditions that will persist through much of the week.

The next NWS briefing will be published by 6 AM Monday September 29, 2025.  The Village will be sharing it and any other updates from the NWS on its social media and on the Severe Weather Event webpage HERE.

Village Response:

Village offices will be operating on a normal schedule tomorrow, Monday, September 29, 2025.

Guidance for Islanders:

  • Preparedness kits should be stocked and ready.  It looks like we may not need them for this event.
  • Marine impacts may have an impact on ferry operations.  Check the BHIT app and website for updates.
  • Flash flooding could make some roads impassable Monday night through Tuesday night.
  • Swimming in the ocean is not advised tomorrow through at least Wednesday (potentially through late week given lingering swells and persistent NE winds).
