Hazardous Waste

EFFECTIVE JUNE 1, 2025, the Village will no longer accept hazardous waste drop-offs. The Village will schedule specific days during the year for the collection of this type of waste from property owners at Public Works, and it will be promptly taken off-island.
This is a common practice among counties and municipalities on the mainland, which helps protect the collection area from contamination.
The first scheduled drop-off event took place on November 20 and 21, 2025, and went smoothly. The 2026 dates are scheduled for June 4 & 5 and November 19 & 20. These have been added to the Village’s Trash & Vegetation Pick Up Calendar and Village Calendar. Hours of operation are yet to-be-determined since the barge reservation can not be made very far in advance. If there is a barge delay or the drop-off days need to be rescheduled, the Village will send out an announcement and post the same on this webpage.
During the established drop-off days, the following hazardous waste items are accepted at the Public Works Department:
Latex and oil-based paint (solidified paint can be disposed of in the trash compactor – paint that originated from a commercial painter will not be accepted), chemicals (household cleaners, pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers), batteries (including golf cart batteries), and electronics (TVs, cell phones, computers). White goods (ex., refrigerators/freezers/washers/dryers) are still accepted year-round.
If you are not able to be on the island during the designated drop-off dates, it is suggested that you use your property manager or a trusted neighbor who has already been designated to handle maintenance and post-storm activities on your property.
