Beach Bonfire Season

Beach bonfire season is now underway, and all four beach access locations are available. Those who wish to have a bonfire must apply online; no hard copy applications will be accepted at Village offices (Department of Public Safety/Village Hall).  All information you need, including the link to the application, can be found on our Beach Bonfire Permit webpage HERE.

A few reminders:

  • Applications are reviewed on weekdays (except Village holidays) and must be submitted by 3:00 p.m. and at least 24 hours prior to your requested burn time.
  • Public Safety will issue permits in an equitable manner.  Submitting multiple applications will not guarantee allocation.
  • No more than one (1) burn permit shall be issued per beach access in a single day.  There is no “sharing” of an access.
  • Littering is prohibited.  Please clean up your site before leaving.

The issuance of a beach bonfire permit is a privilege granted at the discretion of the Village and the Department of Public Safety, not a right.

SENC Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan Meeting

Municipalities and counties in the southeastern region of North Carolina are working on an update to its Regional Hazard Mitigation Plan. Islanders were invited to participate in a survey related to the update. As a part of the update process, there will be a public meeting on the evening of November 20, 2025, from 6 – 7 p.m. There is an in-person and virtual option.  More information below:

Tips to Prepare for Colder Weather

According to the NC Climate Office, the average first fall freeze for our area is November 8, and the average last spring freeze is March 21 (based on data from 2002 to 2019). A freeze is defined as a freeze at or below 32°F as measured at a standard height of 2 meters above the ground.

Your pipes are at risk of freezing anytime temperatures drop below 32°F. However, it’s much more common for pipes to freeze when temperatures dip below 20°F. The longer the weather remains below freezing, the more likely it is that your pipes can freeze if not properly protected and winterized.

Village Utilities often tries to help remind customers when we know that the risk of frozen pipes is likely. We push this information out on our communication channels. There are some things you can do ahead of time to prevent frozen pipes. This information sheet (HERE) provides prevention tips and how to address a frozen pipe if it occurs.

  • Prepare your home to keep out the cold with insulation, caulking, and weather stripping.
  • Clean out gutters.
  • Make sure carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are working.
  • Gather supplies in case you need to stay home for several days without power (medication, pet supplies, extra batteries, radios, flashlights, blankets, etc.)
  • Heating is a leading cause of US home fires and home fire injuries, and the third leading cause of home fire deaths. View the National Fire Prevention Association’s winter fire safety tips HERE.

REMINDERS & EVENTS:

Veterans Day

Village offices will be closed on Tuesday, November 11, 2025, in observance of Veterans Day.  This includes the Island Package Center and Post Office, and Public Safety administration.  Please call 911 if you need a Public Safety Officer to come to you.

Angel Tree Program

Brunswick Family Assistance’s Angel Tree program concludes on November 15. There are still a few angels available to pick up at the Island Package Center & Post Office for those who wish to participate.  This program serves local families living at or below 200% of the federal poverty level. With support from the community, BFA provides holiday gifts for children (16 & under) and seniors (60+), along with food baskets and a frozen turkey for every household.

Please return unwrapped gifts with the angel list attached to 6A Merchant’s Row (Bald Head Island Services) anytime between 8:00 AM and 3:00 PM, Monday through Saturday. Gifts must be dropped off by November 21 to ensure delivery to BFA.

DPS Captain Meet & Greet

Project Longevity has invited our newest Department of Public Safety captains to a meet and greet.  This will take place at the BHA’s Association Center on November 18, 2025, at 1:15 p.m.  Join them for a cup of coffee and learn about the roles of the captains in the department.

Hazardous Waste Drop Off

The Village announced earlier this year that, effective June 1, 2025, it will no longer accept hazardous waste drop-off daily.  The first scheduled drop-off will be on Thursday, November 20, and Friday, November 21. If the contractor is delayed due to weather or another circumstance impacting barge service, the alternate drop-off dates are December 4 and 5, and announcement will be made.  More information can be found on our “Hazardous Waste” webpage HERE.

Next Village Council Meeting

The next regular Village Council Meeting is on Friday, November 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. The agenda will be posted HERE.  Zoom information to listen in remotely can be found HERE.

2025 IPC/PO Holiday Schedule

Thanksgiving Holiday – The IPC/PO will be closed on Thursday, November 27th , and Friday, November 28th, 2025, for the Thanksgiving holiday. Due to low customer visitation last year, there will be no extended hours the day before the holiday (Wednesday, 11/26). USPS mail will be put up on Saturday, November 29th, 2025.

Christmas Holiday – The IPC/PO will be open for extended hours on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, and will open at 10:00 a.m. and close at 6:00 p.m.  The IPC/PO will be closed on Wednesday, December 24th , and Thursday, December 25th. Although the Village offices will remain closed on Friday, December 26th, the IPC/PO will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. that day. We recommend that if you are having items shipped to the island for this holiday that you place your orders by December 9 or earlier to give sufficient time to make it to the island.
