Fire Prevention Education at BHI Academy
Today, the Department of Public Safety’s Fire Inspector, Chip Sudderth, visited the Bald Head Island Academy to educate its scholars on fire prevention. Fire Prevention Week officially starts on Sunday, October 8, 2023. Each year, the week has an area of focus, and this year’s is cooking safety. BHI Academy scholars learned about smoke detectors, having a fire escape plan for their home, and cooking safety. They also had a fire drill.
When asked what BHI property owners should know about fire safety, Sudderth said that property owners should make sure that their house number is visible from the road. Oftentimes vegetation can cover address bollards or the address numbers fade and become indistinguishable from the background color. Please check your house number and make sure that it is visible from the road and take immediate measures to correct if it is not.
Row Boat Row Roadwork
Village Utilities will be removing a portion of the asphalt to install a gravity sewer connection in front of 198 Row Boat Row on Wednesday, October 4, 2023. There should be enough space left for golf carts to get through on one side, but not ICE vehicles and possibly the trams. The work should be complete by noon that day. BHI Transportation has been notified.
UPDATE (posted 10/4 8:55 AM) – This work has been postponed to Thursday, October 5, 2023.
CodeRED Test
The Village will be testing the CodeRED notification system on Wednesday, October 4, 2023, at 7:00 p.m. to validate the information in the notification database. There is no need to act if you receive the call. For more information about the CodeRed notification system and the test go HERE.
UPDATE (posted 10/5 7:30 AM) – The 10/4 test did not go out as planned. We will be trying again on Thursday, October 5, 2023, at 7:00 p.m.
Marina Park Dock
The Marina Park dock is now open to the public! The previous dock sustained significant damage during Hurricane Isiais. The Village applied for FEMA funding to replace it and a temporary access and floating dock were put in place until the funding and permits were obtained. Now islanders have a larger “t” dock at the park. One side of the “t” is closed temporarily while a handrail for the gangway is fabricated, the remainder is now open for all to enjoy!
Duke Energy Feature
A while back Duke Energy visited the island to film a feature on the Duke Energy lineman, Mike Elliott, who has been an integral part of the island’s electrical system. It was Elliot who mapped out the island’s underground electrical system 34 years ago and his knowledge of the island helped configure the multi-year power grid improvement project that was recently completed. View the video and read more about Elliott’s work on BHI HERE.
