It was decided later that the Council would need to have another workshop.  This is scheduled for 6/11 (more information below).
  • A public hearing was held, and text amendments to Chapter 6, Buildings & Building Regulations, were unanimously adopted as presented.

A full recap with additional details is posted monthly on our website HERE. If you’d like to listen to an engaging podcast reviewing the regular meeting, you can access our podcast HERE. All questions should go to public.information@villagebhi.org.

A full account of these meetings can be found in the minutes, which are posted HERE. Typically, minutes are posted with the agenda of next month’s meeting (e.g., if you want to read the December meeting minutes, they can be found under the January regular meeting agenda).

Budget Workshop

The second budget workshop is scheduled for Thursday, June 11, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the multi-purpose room at the Department of Public Safety (273 Edward Teach Extension).  Those who cannot attend in person can view the meeting on Zoom (HERE).

Islanders can keep up with the budget process by going to our “Annual Budget” webpage, which can be found HERE.  Taxpayers have access to the budget schedule, video of the budget workshops, presentation slides, meeting minutes, and any additional information produced as part of the Council’s deliberation on the FY27 budget.  Taxpayers are encouraged to submit questions and comments.

Beach Access Maintenance

Over the last several weeks, the Village’s contractor has been working to extend several beach access crossovers. Currently, all beach accesses are completed (19, 20, 21, 24, 26, and 39) except for beach access 15.

Each year, the Village surveys its beach accesses to determine needs, prioritizes the ones that need repair, and selects a handful to include in the annual budget. If you notice any repair needs at the beach accesses, please submit a service request so the Village can evaluate and address the needs as soon as possible. You can submit a service request online HERE.

Road Maintenance

All road paving is complete.  Shoulder work on 39 roads throughout the island started on May 12 and was expected to wrap up on May 15.  Unfortunately, there were equipment issues, and this work has been delayed. The remaining 80% of the shoulder work should take place from June 1 through June 5.  Any updates will be posted on our “Road Closures” webpage HERE and on our social media.

The FY27 budget is still a work in progress; however, at this point, the Village Council is in support of allocating additional funds for road maintenance next year.  So far, the proposed road paving for next year includes South Bald Head Wynd (850 linear feet), West Bald Head Wynd (1,300 linear feet), Keelson Row (190 linear feet), and 450 linear feet of patchwork and other miscellaneous patches.  As details of next year’s project are finalized, the Village will post updates on its “Village Projects” webpage (HERE).

Please note that the Village has funds in its annual budget to address potholes.  Requests for pothole repair can be made online via our service request portal HERE (the hammer icon on our website homepage), or you can call us at (910) 457—9700 ext. 1000.

Hurricane Season

NOAA is expected to release its 2026 outlook on the Atlantic hurricane season on May 21.  Village staff will be attending Brunswick County’s annual hurricane expo next week and will likely receive this information directly from our local National Weather Service officials.  Village staff have already reviewed the Village’s Emergency Management Plan, and plans are underway to have a tabletop exercise and a hurricane preparedness forum for Islanders.

The Village plans to perform a CodeRED notification system test on Monday, June 1, 2026, at 7:00 p.m.  A separate announcement will be released prior to the system test to provide additional information to current subscribers and those who may not be signed up.

In the meantime, Islanders are encouraged to begin preparing if you have not already.  There are many resources on the Village’s “Emergency Preparedness” webpage (HERE), including the video from last year’s Hurricane Preparedness Forum.

Also, the National Weather Service Wilmington is hosting a “Hurricanes 101” webinar for the public on June 4 from 7:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Click HERE to register.

Fraud Alerts

Brunswick County residents can sign up for FREE Fraud Alert notifications through the Register of Deeds Office. This service sends you an email alert if a document is recorded using your name — helping you quickly spot potential fraudulent activity involving property records.

Unfortunately, deed fraud and scam filings continue to impact property owners across the country. While no system can completely prevent fraud, early notification can help you take action faster if something suspicious appears.

  • Free to sign up
  • Daily email notifications
  • Monitor multiple names
  • Quick and easy registration

If you own property in Brunswick County, this is a smart tool to add another layer of protection.

2026 NC Coastal Wildlife Viewing Survey

The North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC) is seeking input from visitors to North Carolina’s coast via a survey that aims to help understand how visitors interact with our coast and the important role tourism plays in supporting conservation. The survey responses will directly inform efforts to protect coastal habitats and the wildlife that depend on them.  A flyer with survey cards and stickers is available for visitors to pick up (or for Islanders to pick up and share with visitors) at Village Hall, and the Island Package Center and Post Office. HERE is a direct link to the survey.

If you have any questions or concerns about the survey, please contact us at 919-707-0167 or surveys@ncwildlife.gov.
