The National Weather Service Wilmington office is currently indicating that a strong coastal low is expected to bring significant marine, wind, and rain impacts for the Bald Head Island area over the next few days (latest briefing HERE).
Please secure your outdoor items, as the wind gusts are expected to be very high. Be careful if you need to travel on the wynds as wind gusts may cause branches to fall and heavy rainfall causes ponding in some areas.
Transportation – Bald Head Island Transportation has posted the following announcement on its website:
The National Weather Service and the United States Coast Guard have issued severe weather warnings for our area beginning Thursday evening (5/25) through Saturday (5/27) to include heavy rains and winds of up to 60 mph. Hazardous conditions may require suspension of services to ensure the safety of passengers and crews. Suspension and/or cancellations will be posted on this website as soon as possible once it is determined it is unsafe to continue service.
(Website HERE).
Village Operations – All essential Village employees will be on duty tomorrow (Friday) and through the weekend. In anticipation of possible ferry service interruptions, remote capable staff will be working off-island tomorrow and offices, including the Island Package Center and Post Office (IPC/PO) may close early depending on the severity of the weather and impacts to ferry operations.
The IPC/PO has already been affected by barge delays today. If you have packages on the island, please pick them up as early as you can tomorrow in case the ferry system is impacted tomorrow afternoon and on Saturday (check package status HERE). The IPC/PO is expected to be open for normal hours Saturday if the ferry is running. As a reminder, FedEx/UPS packages are not delivered to the island on weekends. Monday is a holiday, and the IPC/PO will be closed, and the barge will not be running.
