BHI Entrance Channel Shoaling Update 1

The Village of Bald Head Island would like to thank Islanders, businesses, visitors, and guests for their patience during the evolving nature of the recent shoaling of the entrance channel to Bald Head Island. Please continue to monitor Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc.’s website (HERE) and app for updates on ferry schedules. The Village will be sending future Village’s Voice announcements to update everyone about Village operations.

The Village is in constant communication with Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc.

Here is the latest notice from BHI Transportation Inc. regarding ferry system operations and dredging operations (Posted at 7:38 PM on 7/22):

Due to shoaling at the Bald Head Island entrance channel, ferry service will be interrupted during the following low tide periods (approximately 90 minutes before and after low tide):

Thursday, July 23: Low tide at 9:55 AM
Friday, July 24: Low tide at 10:04 AM

Additionally, to support dredging operations, ferry service will end early on Thursday, July 23, and Friday, July 24. On both days:

Last departure from Deep Point: 7:00 PM
Last departure from Bald Head Island: 7:30 PM

The Village of Bald Head Island has contracted a dredging company to restore the entrance channel to a safe operating depth. However, due to unfavorable wind conditions, the dredge has been unable to operate since Monday, July 20, 2026, allowing shoaling to continue.

During active dredging operations, the Village will temporarily close the entrance channel to all vessel traffic to allow the work to be completed safely and efficiently. These temporary schedule adjustments provide additional time each evening to support the dredging effort and help restore normal ferry operations as quickly as possible.

We appreciate your patience and understanding as this critical work is completed. Please continue to monitor the app and website for the latest service updates and notifications.
