Barge is Down

Barge customers were notified by Bald Head Island Transportation, Inc. that the barge will not be running today, Monday, November 6, 2023.  Repairs need to be made and the estimated time of completion of the repairs is unknown at this time.  The barge office will notify customers (including the Village) as soon as they know the barge is safe to operate.

In the meantime, food, mail, toiletries, etc. will be transported to the island via ferry.  What will not occur until the repairs are made is the hauling of waste off the island and fuel deliveries.  The Village would like all Islanders to do what they can to conserve waste and fuel until further notice is given of the status of the barge service.

Due to space on the ferries, some packages may not make it to the island until barge service resumes.

Solid Waste Pick-Up

GFL (Green for Life) is one truck down this week, so there may be a delay in solid waste pickup for some customers.  The truck that is down is currently stuck at Kinross Court and will be there until a suitable tow truck arrives via barge.

Wastewater Treatment Plant Expansion

The Village is proactively working to be on target to start on its wastewater treatment plant expansion project well ahead of build-out with plans and permit applications completed by late summer/early fall 2024.  A summary of this project has been prepared and posted to the Village Projects webpage and Utilities webpage.  The summary gives additional background on what the Village’s service demands are, what the Village is required to do and when, what has been accomplished, and what is currently in the works.
