Weather Update – The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Ice Storm Warning for the area including Bladen, Brunswick, Columbus, Horry, New Hanover, and Pender counties. Village officials continue to keep an eye on the forecast and potential impacts of this storm. 

According to the latest NWS Wilmington briefing, wintry precipitation will begin as freezing rain Friday morning through the afternoon, spreading south through the day before ending into Saturday morning as sleet or snow.  Downed trees, power outages and hazardous travel are expected.  Artic air behind the front could lead to prolonged impacts, especially for those without power.

Transportation – The contractor ferry and barge service have been canceled for tomorrow, Friday 1/21/2021.  Passenger ferry operations are planned to start at 10:00 a.m. tomorrow (1/21) depending on weather and hazardous road conditions.  Tram operations are suspended Friday and Saturday on the island.  Further assessments regarding main ferry operations will be made Friday morning and throughout the day.  Normal operations will resume on Monday.

Update from BHI Transportation (1/21/22 – 10:00 AM) – Ferry runs began at 10 am today. They continue to monitor conditions to determine the last ferry run but anticipate the last departure from the island to be at 4:30 pm today. Tram service remains unavailable. The contractor ferry and barge service have been canceled. Please continue to monitor their website (HERE) for the latest announcements.

Update from BHI Transportation (1/22/22 – 1:00 PM) – The last ferry run from Deep Point will be at 4:00 p.m. today. The last ferry run from the island will be at 4:30 p.m. today. Freezing conditions may impact the start time tomorrow (Sunday 1/23). Please continue to monitor their website (HERE) for the latest announcements.

REMINDERS:

Golf Cart Registrations – The Village previously reported a delay in receiving the new registration stickers this year and then indicated that they were in.  Please continue to be patient as Village staff works through the backlog to get the stickers out as quickly as possible. Folks who registered their vehicle after December 20th have not been processed as of today.

Public Safety Officers are aware of the delay and enforcement will not be in full effect until it is understood that all who have taken measures to register their vehicles have the new stickers. If you still have not updated your registration(s) please do so now online HERE.

Village Offices Closed Tomorrow (1/21) – Village offices will be closed on Friday, January 21, 2022.  Essential staff, including Public Safety, will remain on duty (if you have an emergency or need an officer to come to you, please call 911). The Island Package Center & Post Office will also be closed on Friday, January 21, 2022.  Staff will attempt to put up first-class mail on Saturday for pick-up late Saturday afternoon.

Regular Council Meeting – The regular Village Council meeting has been rescheduled for Tuesday, January 25, 2022, at 10:00 a.m.  The agenda can be viewed HERE. Zoom information is HERE.

Timber Bridge – The Village Public Safety Department may close the timber bridge to traffic for an extended period if it becomes icy.
